BAPTISM
Baptism is the moment in faith when we submit our lives to God. We obey Him and allow ourselves to be immersed in water. By faith we believe that it is during this moment that God keeps His promise to us and washes away our sins. Baptism is the commitment moment of our lives. As you look at the original text of the Bible you will see the word baptizo…it simply means to be immersed in water. This word has never been translated because the implications of translating it would mean that many religious groups would need to change their traditions. Most translators simply transliterate this word into English without translating it.

Mark 16:16
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

* What is the result of believing and being baptized according to this passage?

Acts 8:12
"But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

* When were these people baptized?
* Why is faith so important to baptism?

Acts 2:38
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

* Why were these people baptized?
* What did Peter tell them would happen if they were baptized?

Acts 22:16
"And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name."

* What is the purpose of baptism according to this passage?

Acts 8:36-39
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

* How does this passage help us to understand the method of baptism used in New Testament times?

Romans 6:2-4
By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesuswere baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

* How does the baptism by full immersion fit in with what is being taught in this passage?

Acts 16:33
At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

* What does this passage teach us about the importance of baptism?

Matthew 28:19-20
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

* When Jesus sent his disciples out to the world with this great commission what did he tell them to do?
* Why is baptism so important?
